This course covers all of the essentials for gaining competency in navigating into the esophagus utilizing transnasal video endoscopy and the PatCom Medical Introducer. Attendees will also gain experience in pharyngeal and esophageal conditions that result in need for enteral access to the esophagus, various tubes and catheters used, and risks associated with placement of those tubes and catheters. All attendees will receive a binder with course materials and a box of PatCom Introducers ($380 value).
Alternative Feeding and Esophageal Access/Introduction to the PatCom Introducer -
This section of the training course begins with a lecture portion on anatomy and physiology of the pharynx and esophagus, catheters used in enteral access, testing that can be completed through enteral access, and the role of Speech Pathologists in placement of various catheters and tubes. It also provides the foundation for implementing the PatCom Introducer into your practice. We will educate you on the current risks that are associated with tube placements and how the PatCom Introducer is used to reduce risk and patient discomfort.
Hands-On Practice:
Following completion of our introductory training, hands-on practice will be provided utilizing anatomical model and live volunteers in order to gain competency with enteral access.
This portion of the course is designed to provide understanding of esophageal access and the use of the PatCom Introducer. Participants will learn how to prepare and pass the PatCom Introducer utilizing good body mechanics while understanding different techniques when passing through the UES. We will discuss tips for easy navigation through the nasal passage and ways to improve the comfort of your patient. Our instructors will mentor and supervise you completing all passes throughout the course. Our course instructors have been deemed competent for supervision and training in FEES and placement of the PatCom Introducer.
Intended Audience:
This course is being offered for 0.8 ASHA CEUs, Advanced Level. No partial credit will be provided. All participants must be trained in FEES and/or laryngoscopy to participate in the hands-on portion of the course.
Learning Outcomes:
At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe patients appropriate for use of catheters and enteral feeding tubes.
- List commonly used catheters and tubes for enteral access.
- Summarize risks for placing catheters and tubes without visualization.
- Describe the procedure for placing PatCom Introducer for enteral access.
- Demonstrate ability to navigate endoscope and PatCom Introducer through the nasal cavity and pharynx and into the esophagus while minimizing patient discomfort.

- 9:00 – 9:30 – Case Study of Misplaced Tubes while placing blind

- 9:45 – 10:15 – Physiological impairments resulting in need for enteral access, catheter placement, and alternative feeding
- 10:15 – 11:00 – Current practice in blind placement of feeding tubes
- 11:00 – 11:30 – Case study of proper implementation with use of PatCom Introducer
- 11:30 – 12:00 - Personal experience with collaborating with multi-disciplinary team and hospital leaders
- 12:00 – 12:15 – Question and Answer period
- 12:15 – 12:45 – Lunch provided by PatCom
- 12:45 – 1:15 – Discussion and Demonstration of Set Up for Esophageal Access Procedure

Dr. Kristine Galek is an Associate Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, School of Medicine. She teaches ASHA-approved continuing education courses, and she is an active researcher with interests in swallowing disorders, voice disorders, craniofacial disorders (resonance), and speech science. Additionally, she is the Director of the UNR-Laboratory for the Investigation of Voice, Eating and Swallowing (UNR-LIVES) which promotes undergraduate and graduate research projects.
