This course explores current practices in medication administration for pill dysphagia and Medication Intake Problems (M.I.P.). Participants will learn about food and liquid interactions, risks of crushing pills, and effective solutions for safe medication delivery, ensuring optimal patient and provider safety.
Learning Outcomes:
Following completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Identify current practices in medication administration when pill dysphagia or Medication Intake Problems (M.I.P.)
- Describe the interactions encountered when medications are given with food and liquids other than plain water.
- Identify the risks to the patient and the health care provider when pills are given in a crushed form.
- Describe solutions for safe and effective medication administration when pill dysphagia or M.I.P is present.
Time Ordered Agenda
- 0-5 minutes: What is pill dysphagia or Medication Intake Problems (M.I.P.)?
- 5-10 minutes: Current practices in medication administration
- 10-20 minutes: Medication interactions and risks to the patient and health care provider with medication administration.
- 20-25 minutes: Solutions for safe medication administration when pill dysphagia or M.I.P. is present
- 25-30 minutes: Question and answer period and post-test

To complete this course and receive a certificate of completion, the learner must:
- Attend the entire course. No partial credit will be awarded.

Shelby Farwig is a speech pathologist with a variety of experience across diverse healthcare settings. She brings a unique blend of clinical expertise and business leadership skills to her role as Director of Clinical Operations at PatCom Medical. With an SLP career spanning acute care, inpatient rehab, and outpatient settings, Shelby has honed her skills in diagnosing and treating communication and swallowing disorders. Shelby has experience with both Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) and Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS). Shelby completed her undergraduate studies at Ball State University and received her graduate degree from the University of Cincinnati. In her current capacity at PatCom Medical, Shelby leads a dedicated clinical team, overseeing operations and ensuring the delivery of high-quality customer relations and service. Her strategic vision and hands-on approach have contributed to the success of the organization, earning her recognition as a leader in the field. Beyond her managerial responsibilities, Shelby remains actively engaged in advancing the field of speech pathology. She shares insights and best practices through the use of technological advancements and vendor product releases.

Savannah Moore was born and raised in Wooster, Ohio, and received her Master’s in Speech Language Pathology at The University of Akron. She currently lives in Jacksonville, Florida. Savannah is a passionate SLP with experience in the post-acute and outpatient settings. She has been working for PatCom Medical as a Clinical Specialist for a year and a half and loves being able to provide support and positive experiences for SLPs and other medical professionals gaining access to instrumental assessments.
